NEWS FROM BAYHAM ABBEY

BAYHAM OLD ABBEY

BAYHAM ABBEY IS NOW A FREE ACCESS SITE

English Heritage initiated a major organisational review last year and one of the work streams within that review was to look at options for a number of properties where we charged admission but where the income generated did not cover the expense of manning and opening that property. Bayham Abbey was one such property that fell into that category as it has been operating at a financial loss for a number of years. As we did not want to get into a situation where we had to close properties we took the decision at the beginning of this year to turn Bayham Abbey into a free site from the 1st April, removing the manned presence but the also the admission charge. The fact that the majority of the ruin at Bayham is external viewing only made this relatively easy to achieve and ensure that there is continued public access to the property.

ARE YOU ABLE TO HELP?

A second phase of work within the organisational review is about to get underway and this will be to look at ways in which we can animate free sites such as Bayham Abbey through the use of volunteers, this work is due to report back in June. On the subject of volunteers we are also looking to find a person (or persons) in the local community who can operate as key keepers at the site for us, that is unlocking and locking the main gate each day and undertaking visual checks on the condition of the site. Our nearest manned site is now Battle and staff there will not be able to get to Bayham every day. We are currently calling upon the resident who lives in the flat on site and another immediate neighbour to undertake this role on a temporary basis, but would like to find someone locally who can take it on a more permanent basis. We do pay a small fee for this service so if you are interested or know anyone locally who is please contact
